The Roman Legionary Museum

Caerleon is about a half hour drive from Cardiff (M4 East and folllow signs) and is the site of a major Roman army garrison. What have the Romans ever done for us? Well - in Caerleon baths, barracks and a huge grass amphitheatre. Open 10 am – 5 pm Monday – Saturday and 2 pm – 5 pm Sunday. If you've got time, there are more remains a few miles further on at Caerwent.

Caerphilly Castle

Caerphilly Castle

Caerphilly is five miles north of Cardiff and is home to the largest Medieval Castle in Europe. The spectacular moated fortress dominates the town and the famous leaning tower outleans the one at pisa by several degrees. There are also real working siege engines which are fired on bank holidays and during special events.

Cosmeston

Cosmeston Country Park is situated on the outskirts of Penarth around 5 miles or so from Cardiff Centre. The park is a flooded former limestone quarry which has been landscaped and now forms a home for all kinds of birds. There's also a replica medieval village which plays hosts to special events and re-enactments during the summer months.

Llancaiach Fawr

Llancaiach Fawr

Head north from Cardiff on the main A470, hang a right at the first roundabout and you'll find Llancaiach Fawr - a wonderfully preserved Elizabethan Manor house. Theres an informative visitor centre but the most enjoyable part of the tour is meeting the 17th century servants who'll talk to you about how it was to be part of a great household during the civil war. Reputedly one of the most haunted houses in britain, the manor runs regular evening ghost hunting tours although these are limited to over 16's only.

Big Pit

Big Pit

Big Pit real Coal Mine is the only one in Britain that you can actually go down. Big Pit was a working mine untill 1980 when it became uneconomic and it closed for three years befor re-opening as a museum. Visitors can see the pithead equipment and baths, a museum and visit the cafe and gift shop.

The former Lewis Merthyr Colliery in Trehafod has been converted into a museum of the Rhonnda Valley's coal heritage.Although you can't descend the original shaft for safety reasons, theres a great simulated underground tour and a ride. Check out the museum and see what life was like as a miner in the hey day of coal..

Regular service during the summer months, along with special events throughout the year. The running season starts in June, operating every weekend until September but check for special events outside this period. Christmas, Halloween Ghost Trains ant Thomas the Tank events. Trains depart hourly from 1100 until 1600 The round trip takes 45 minutes. Tickets are valid all day and permit unlimited travel on the day of issue.

This narrow gauge line runs through the beautiful Brecon Beacons with spectacular views of mountains and lakes. Regular service during the summer months, along with special events throughout the year. The running season starts in March, operating every weekend until November but check for special events outside this period.

Trains depart at regular intervals from 1100 until 1600 The round trip takes 60 minutes. Tickets are valid all day and permit unlimited travel on the day of issue.
