Green Cardiff

Cardiff is literally one of the UK's greenest cities with a string of parks running from the city centre out towards the northern suburbs. These link together making it possible to walk or cycle from Cardiff Bay to the countryside with minimal use of roads.
bute park

Bute Park

Grandest of all Cardiff's parks is Bute Park which was presented to the City by the fifth Marquess of Bute in 1947. It's heavily wooded and contains an arboretum with many rare and interesting specimen trees. The park runs from the City centre (main access and parking behind the Castle) parallel to the river Taff and approx 1.5 miles north to Western Avenue.

roath conservatory

Roath Park

Roath Park sits a mile or two to the north of the city centre and features a large lake where you can row yourself around or take a trip on a launch and admire the ducks and swans. After your row, you can enjoy a cuppa in the lakeside cafe or perambulate the conservatory with its tropical plants and giant carp.

cefn-onn trees

Cefn-onn Park

Cefn-onn is on the northern outskirts of the city and is a wooded park famed for its rhododenrons. Amenities are limited and it's steep slopes make it difficult for the less active but it well repays a visit. Easily accesible by rail to Lisvane and Thornhill station.

The Taff Trail

The Taff trail runs for 50 or so miles from Cardiff Bay to Brecon. You can do it in one hit if you're keen (and fit) or take it in stages. A popular option is to take the bike on the train to Merthyr Tydfil and cycle back to cardiff. A half day cycling the parks of Cardiff is also an enjoyable option for weekend cyclists and families with younger children.

Pontcanna Fields

Sophia Gardens - Pontcanna Fields - Llandaff Fields

These three parks run north from the city centre more or less continuously. A walk up the river bank from the west end of Canton bridge will take you through Sophia Gardens, past the Welsh Sports Centre and Cricket Ground into Pontcanna Fields. You can either carry on up the riverbank to Llandaff or turn left at the weir for Pontcanna fields.
